ZFS is a enterprise-level open source filesystem and volume manager that offers unprecedented flexibility and commitment to data integrity. It’s a next-generation file system that eliminates most, if not all, of the limitations found in legacy file systems and hardware RAID. With over 8.5 million downloads, more people have trusted FreeNAS and ZFS to keep their data safe than any other open source storage software in the world.
All blocks within the ZFS filesystem contain a checksum of the target block, which is verified when the block is read. Blocks that contain active data are never overwritten in place. Instead, a new block is allocated and data is written to it. This means that data is never over-written when storing data ensure data-integrity.
Snapshots and clones
Make and save snapshots of the entire file system on demand or schedule the process to save effort. In case of malware attack or user error, administrators can roll the system back to an uninfected state. Recovery takes seconds, not days. Snapshots can be replicated to another FreeNAS system to create a remote backup in case of fire or catastrophic hardware failure. Users can easily manage, delete, copy, and monitor saved snapshots through the web UI.
Writable snapshots, or clones, are just as simple to create and make it convenient to recover data and files. Just like regular snapshots, clones are space-efficient and only modified files take up space.
Data deduplication is a process that optimizes space utilization by eliminating duplicate copies of data. Files are scanned and analyzed for duplicates before being written to disk. This process is resource-intensive and can impact performance greatly if the system lacks caching devices or sufficient RAM.

Encrypted volumes can only be read by a FreeNAS system that possesses the master key for that volume.
